Ever wonder if there was a class system in the world of superheroes? After all the big names like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc., who were the supporting players? The folks assigned to the less-than-stellar gigs of saving only a small part of the world? According to this intermittently successful send-up of comic book heroism, there are indeed masked heroes who struggle and toil for their moment in the super sun. Based on the Dark Horse comic book series, Mystery Men follows the travails of three B-list avengers--Mr.Furious (Ben Stiller), the Shoveler (WilliamH. Macy), and the Blue Raja (Hank Azaria)--as they fight to make themselves known to the citizens of Champion City, quite difficult to do when the flashy Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear, never better) takes all the cool gigs and has product endorsements up the ying-yang. According to them, it's all a matter of timing--never mind that Mr.Furious never rises above a snit, or that the Blue Raja wears green. Their big break comes when Captain Amazing is abducted by the evil Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush), and it's up to this motley crew to save Champion City.
Blessed with a wondrously gifted comic cast and full of droll details, Mystery Men struggles in fits and spurts towards its climax. Transcendently witty in parts, it's also woefully sophomoric in others. Literally, this is the kind of movie in which someone gets off a brilliant line and then sits on a fork. Still, when this movie is rolling, it's gleefully on target, thanks primarily to the mordantly cocky Stiller and Janeane Garofalo as a latecomer to the superhero gang; her secret weapon is a bowling ball in which her dead father's head is encased. The comic chemistry between these two is fierce, and when you add the dryly funny Macy and the endearing Azaria (who finally gets a chance to let loose with his comic gifts), it's a hilarious joyride. Too bad that the gas tank is only half-full; this stunning cast deserves a first-rate vehicle. With Tom Waits as a weapons expert, Claire Forlani as the requisite babe, and Paul Reubens as the Spleen, the world's most flatulent superhero. --Mark Englehart

A Comic(ly) Comedic Gem May 22, 2006

I used to read comice books as a child and have recently started reading them once again. I actually purchased this movie years ago and recently popped it into my DVD player. This movie is fantastic! For anyone who enjoyed reading Batman, Superman, and just about any comic book, this movie is full of references and commentary that will make you laugh out loud. I kind of look at this movie in a similar vein to Hackers - it did not do particulary well in theatres, but because of a small buzz, more and more people have given this movie a chance. The story itself basically follows three "average" superheroes - Mr. Furious, The Shoveler, and the Blue Raja - who are trying to make a name for themselves while in the shadow of a Superman-esque, larger-than-life figure in Captain Amazing. The superhero business in the movie is one that has become engrossed with endorsements deals and a struggle to determine who deserves credit for saving the day. The movie is especially pertinent these days with DC comics doing something similar in their Infinite Crisis and 52 comic book series, which describes a world where the average superhero must fill the void left by the disappearance of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.
This movie's dialogue is comic genius and takes you in because at no point does it ever take itself too seriously. And how can it? One of the main characters is described as being good with a shovel, while another throws forks and spoons at people. With Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, and a whole slew of gifted actors, the movie is something no one should pass up, whether he or she be a comic book lover or someone who thinks comic books are merely for kids.
The Spleen Lives! April 26, 2006

When I heard about this movie, the thing that grabbed me the most was Paul Reuben's character the Spleen. As a big Pee-Wee fan, I had to at least give this a chance. But if you want to know what his super power is, you have to pull his finger.
The Spleen did not disappoint. Neither does this movie. I was pleasantly surprised with the whole package. Good acting when good acting is necessary, nice story, great premise. Good directing, too, almost Burton-esque. Indeed, there was a rumor that Tim Burton really did direct this, but I don't really believe it.
It kept me laughing. If you're anything like me, it will you too.
But most people aren't anything like me.
Good, But Could Have Been Better March 25, 2006
This super hero spoof has it's moments, but unfortunately there's not enough of them and it comes off more corney than funny most of the time. I mean the concept itself is pretty good. You have one real super hero who has gone completely commercial, and a group of basically every day people who consider themselves superheros because they can do some odd thing fairly well......Sometimes that is.
This is amuzing, and probably a movie that younger kids might like a lot....The violence isn't ever really violent so it should be ok for most kids.....And it does end with a few lessons learned. That and the fact that these super heros aren't actually super, but can be heros anyway would make this a fairly good family movie....
You want weird with that? February 24, 2006
It's not every day that something this unusual comes along. A fine cast that would not normally be assembled in the same place take on a script that's plot not really important.
Ben Stiller is out of place but everything else varies between extremely funny and just plain odd, making for a bit of a French cheese of a film. Mostly it works. Personally I loved it -but I'm not normal. Eddie Izzard is the key name in the cast list - if you like his stuff, you'll probably like this film.
Not a bad movie that we've got here January 27, 2006

As you might have guessed by the cover it's about Z rate superheroes with possibly bogus, or dysfunctioning powers. What can I say about this movie? Well, it's not as funny you'd think, nor as action centered as you might hope it'd be in order to get past the mundane parts, however, once you get to the comedy gold, it's all worth it. Academy Award Winner Geoffrey Rush, plays the arch villain who's brilliant and wait till you see his attack with his pinky (Yes, you must see it to believe it) and hits an apporiate note. Ben Stiller in one of his best performances that straddles both comedy and drama and William H. Macy in a great performance as the Shoveler. The entire cast is wonderfully chosen, but at times you can't help feeling that the ensemble cast is being underutilized in order to simply provide dramatic weight to the characters. Read that how you will, it just moves slow at times because it feels as if it's lost its way in terms of the plot, but the film ends well and goes out with a nice denoument (comedown from the climax). It's not classic as a whole, but some things from it are heights of comedy that may not be reached again for some time in terms of their campiness.
