Amazon.com essential video
Jane Austen's classic novel of 1813, Pride and Prejudice, still wins the hearts of countless schoolgirls with its romantic story of Elizabeth Bennet and her Mr. Darcy. Now, the 1996 BBC miniseries is winning over adults, with its faithful adaptation, gorgeous scenery, and superb acting.
The essence of the story is the antagonism between Mr. Darcy, a wealthy single man who believes Elizabeth to be beneath him, and Elizabeth, who upon being insulted at a dance by the aloof Darcy refuses to associate with him in any manner. Austen evokes incredible tension with the wit and flirtation of the two characters, and director Simon Langton (who also directed Upstairs Downstairs) successfully translates the repartee and conflict in this six-hour miniseries. Dialogue, for the most part, is painstakingly replicated, except when fleshing out and smoothing for modern sensibilities was necessary. Darcy, for instance, is drawn out, giving his personality significantly more depth. The acting sweeps you away to Regency England: Jennifer Ehle (of Wilde) is convincing as the obstinate Elizabeth, who, despite her mother's attempts to marry her off, spurs the attentions of Darcy. And Colin Firth (of The English Patient) will have women everywhere longing for a Mr. Darcy of their own.
For those who have been on an Austen binge--enjoying such excellent adaptations as Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion--this miniseries will round out the ultimate Austen video library. For those new to these romantic period pieces, this version of Pride and Prejudice will have you hooked and longing for more. One caveat, however: plan to watch it in an entire day, because very few have the self-control to not watch all six hours in a single sitting. --Jenny Brown

Pride and Prejudice A&E version June 28, 2006

The videos were in excellent condition and had been delivered in a timely manner. Only one of my packages was able to be tracked - my guess would be people didn't check in or update tracking info at points they should have. Recommend anyone to purchase from this website.
A must have! June 28, 2006

I have seen all of the Pride and Prejudice and this is by far my favorite. The acting is superior and it follows the book. I prefer this two DVD format to the six VHS format. If you like Pride and Prejudice, you must have this movie!

This is, in my opinion, the best version made. It sticks closely to the book and preserves Jane Austin's wit and style. Miss Austin's larger than life characters come alive in this 5 hour version. The few additions serve only to clarify.
Many of my friends and I like to get together a group to watch this wonderful movie once a year or so. In fact quite a few have been introduced to the wonderful world of Jane Austin for the first time.

I very much disagree with the reviewer down below. What did you mean about taking God's name in vain? I'm a religious person and there was certainly nothing blasphemous here. As to not being romantic enough, personal tastes differ and I for one preferred the restrained passion here since it made it much more romantic IMHO. The length helps deepen the characters and the plot and I for one am grateful for it. I'm sorry Barlow but I watched this after seeing your review and I thoroughly disagree.
The 2005 version is infinitely superior June 25, 2006

Yes I know that this one follows the book exactly, but the acting is SO much better in the new one with Keira Knightley. I'm sorry, but some things like the second proposal scene, were so unromantic, and in the 2005 one, they actually were. Also, this one takes God's name in vain several times which I do not appreciate. I am a huge fan of the book, and there were a few things in the 2005 one that made me cringe, and some things I wish they had done differently, but overall I had a MUCH better impression of the new one then this one. I am even going to say something that some are going to consider akin to blasphemy. I think Matthew McFadyen was a better Darcy than Colin Firth. And while Keira Knightley may have been too pretty for the role of Elizabeth (it really wasn't believable when Darcy called her "barely tolerable"), I think she seemed to fit the role better than Jennifer Ehle.
Now I will stop comparing it to the newer version and rate it on it's own merits. It is a very good adaptation in terms of staying close to the book. Near perfect, actually. And I really enjoyed it. But it's not one I would probably watch again because:
1. It takes God's name in vain.
2. It's REALLY long.
3. I like the new one so much better.
