Like The Gumball Rally (1976) before it, former stuntman Hal Needham's The Cannonball Run was inspired by the same real-life cross-country road race. If The Gumball Rally was the critical favorite, The Cannonball Run was the box-office favorite (spawning the almost-as-successful sequel, Cannonball Run II, a few years later). Aside from top-billed stars Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise (stars of Needham's Smokey and the Bandit series) plus Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. (as horny priests), the movie features many of the same actors (Bert Convy, Jamie Farr) that could be found on a typical '80s episode of The Love Boat (along with the same caliber of writing). But as the tagline notes, "You'll never guess who wins"--and it's true. As in most road-race movies, it's the journey that counts, not the destination. This particular journey includes cool cars (like Adrienne Barbeau's black Lamborghini), crazed bikers (led by Peter "Easy Rider" Fonda), hot martial arts action (from Jackie Chan as a Japanese racecar driver), a conspicuously braless Farrah Fawcett (recipient of a Golden Raspberry nomination for her performance), and possibly the most egregious use of product placement featured in a movie up until that time (one vehicle has "GMC Trucks" noted prominently along the top of the windshield, another has "Hawaiian Tropic" painted on the hood). As with many of the films Jackie Chan has made for Golden Harvest, the Hong Kong-based production company behind The Cannonball Run, wacky outtakes are included during the closing credits. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
A wide variety of characters participate in an illegal cross-country road race. It's a hilarious comedic chase as the eccentric participants are willing to do anything to win.

One of the best movies ever made! June 22, 2006
This is a timeless comedy classic and is a must for anyone's DVD collection. HIGHLY recommended!

Wow,is the world so starved for chase movies that is mindless junk is sen as a great movie. if you like chase or race movies get "cannonball" or "the gumball rally" instead. this is just one long mug at the camera by burt and friends with the one scene that is in every burt movie where he gets dramitac for a second and tells the reason he is like he is.(it was used to good effect in the longest yard, was ok in smokey and the bandit, and reached it's worst in this movie and stroker ace)
burt moans all the time in interviews that he's not taken serious as an actor, well movies like this is the reason why,he doesn't act he just mugs for the camera and smiles,it takes more than that to be thought of as a great actor.
The Cannonbal Run 1981 April 24, 2006

Showcasing one of the most impressive cast-list of all time , The Cannonball run is the quinintessential all-American-action-comedy from Director Hal Needham (1931- ) of (Smokey & The Bandit 1977) , (Hooper 1978) and (Smokey & The Bandit II 1980) . Featuring hilarious show-stopping performance from such Hollywood greats as Burt Reynolds (1936-) , Dom Delouise (1933- ) , Roger Moore (1927-) , Dean Martin (1917-1995) , Sammy Davie Jr. (1925-1990) . This incomparable gag-fest pays comic tribute to the real-life eventt "The Cannonbal Sea-to-shining-sea memorial trophy Dash " a non-stop , anything-goes and thorougly illegal road race from Americas Atlantic to Pacific Coastline ! . Do you need more feedback to the best Cannonbal movie ever made , i dont think so , High Quality transfer from original elements . Recommended
pretty fun movie March 14, 2006

This movie is pretty original in my opinion. From the crazy doctor to the beautiful farrah fawcet, I like pretty much this whole movie. If you go into this wanting to see some great car chases like the original gone in 60 seconds, you are not going to get it. The story is only set around the car race, so all the comedy plays off of the race. Some things are just so absurn and unbelievable in this that you will actually liek the over-the-topness of it. For instance, there is a part where bert and dom are are flying around and need some beer, so they just land the airplane in the street. that was freaking awesome.
So don't expect a great movie, just a fun one.
AND TO CALL OUT TRADE AND 5 WHO IS FOR SOME RASON TRYING TO TELL PEOPLE TO TRY AND FIND THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF THIS, YOU ARE SO FREAKING RETARDED, YOU SHOULD BE BANNED FROM THIS SITE FOREVER. i HAVE NEVER SEEN ANOTHER VERSION OF THIS MOVIE EXCEPT ON TNN, SO WHY DON'T YOU TELL US WHAT VERSION YOU HAVE AND WHY IT IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN THIS.
oR BETTER YET, WHY DON'T YOU WATCH THIS MOVIE BFORE YOU COPY AND PASTE YOUR REVIEWS UNDER MOVIES LIKE THIS AND SHANGHAI KNIGHTS(WHICH IS ALSO THE AMERICAN VERSION, YET YOU ARE TELLING PEOPLE TO TRY AND FIND AN ORIGINAL VERSION OF THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!)
JUST FOR YOUR INFORMATION, THESE MOVIES WERE MADE FOR AMERICAN AUDIENCES, SO PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO TRY AND FIND A DIFFERENT VERSION. yET WITH YOUR UNBELIEVABLE STUPIDITY, PEOPLE WILL MISS OUT ON MOVIES LIKE THIS BECAUSE YOU ARE TELLING THEM IT IS THE WRONG VERSION. sO COPY AND PASTE, STOP PUTTIGN YOUR EFFING REVIEWS ON HERE, OR AT LEAST WATCH THEM FIRST.
Crazy, Silly, & Wonderful! March 13, 2006

I watched this because I adore Dean Martin and the Rat Pack, but only after putting off watching it for so long--I was afraid it would be really stupid and not be worthy of being Dean's next to last movie. I had no reason to fear :) . It is absolutely hilarious! The second one is a million times better (more Dean & Sammy and a huge plus with Frank), but this one's great. It's just crazy and silly and a ton of fun.
