Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com essential video
Out of Sight scored critical raves, but its title sums up the theatrical fate of Steven Soderbergh's coolly comic crime caper and misfit romance based on Elmore Leonard's novel. But this is the sort of buried treasure home video was created to rescue.

George Clooney comes into his own as a leading man in the role of inveterate bank robber Jack Foley. Incarcerated, he uses another inmate's prison break as a cover for his own escape. Waiting for him, according to plan, is his partner, Buddy (Ving Rhames). Also waiting for him, not according to plan, is federal agent Karen Sisco (the ravishing Jennifer Lopez). She finds herself disarmed in more ways than one when she is deposited in the getaway car's trunk with Jack. But that doesn't stop her from joining the task force created to capture him, while he plans "one last heist."

Out of Sight is a rich, entertaining film, stylish without being showy, faithful to the integrity of Leonard's potent dialogue and quirky characters, and seamlessly acted by a dream ensemble. Standouts include Albert Brooks as convicted insider trader Richard Ripley, who while in prison brags to the wrong people that he has $5 million in uncut diamonds hidden in his house; Don Cheadle as Maurice (don't call him "Snoopy") Miller, with whom Jack warily teams up to steal said diamonds; Dennis Farina as Karen's protective father (his idea of a birthday gift is a Sig-Hauer .38); and, in unbilled cameos, Michael Keaton, reprising his Jackie Brown role as FBI agent Ray Nicolet, and Samuel L. Jackson.

If you liked Get Shorty and Jackie Brown, you'll find this, well, Out of Sight. --Donald Liebenson

Out of Sight was one of the best movies of 1998, but ironically this superior crime comedy was a box-office disappointment. Fortunately the movie can enjoy a long life on home video, where it can be savored by anyone who missed its original release. Making his best film since 1989's sex, lies, and videotape, director Steven Soderbergh pays tribute to the signature wit and intricacy of Elmore Leonard's novel, brilliantly adapted by Scott Frank, the gifted screenwriter who previously adapted Leonard's Get Shorty. The movie's a prime showcase for the talent and chemistry of George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, respectively playing a career bank robber who's escaped from jail and the federal agent who falls for his charms while tracking him down. Soderbergh directs with confident visual flair, shifting time- lines (a la Pulp Fiction) to weave together subplots and maintain vivid focus on Leonard's splendid characters and smooth-as-silk dialogue. While the sexy repartee between Clooney and Lopez recalls the vintage interplay of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, Ving Rhames and Steve Zahn add ample comic relief as Clooney's accomplices. Dennis Farina is memorable as Lopez's father, and Albert Brooks is almost unrecognizable as a Wall Street crook whose mansion--and a cache of uncut diamonds--provides the setting for the film's climactic caper. As orchestrated by Soderbergh, the film offers a feast of plot twists and surprises, but it never loses track of its delightful characters and the clever wit that brings them so vividly to life. The Collector's Edition DVD includes commentary by Soderbergh, deleted scenes, production notes, theatrical trailers, and more. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The Resurrection and Gradual Appreciation of a Classic Film   July 23, 2006
12 out of 13 found this review helpful

Steven Soderbergh knows his way around the bizarre, nearly impossible storylines and can translate them to film as few others can. OUT OF SIGHT is a little masterpiece of filmmaking despite the fact that when it initially screened in 1998 it seemed to slip by theatergoers' attention. Based on the inimitable Elmore Leonard novel the story begs indulgence in credible situations but shines in quality of script and characterization and an atmospheric cinematic capturing of a dark, film noir comedy drama that grabs you by the head and holds you glued to the screen for the duration.

The story is rather simple on the surface - a jailed bank robber escapes with the help of his buddy and plans a major hit only to encounter a federal agent in pursuit of the two who becomes the love interest portion of this strangely convoluted tail. Subplots and sidebars are sprinkled throughout Soderbergh's telling of Leonard's story, serving to keep our minds alert and mesmerized by the plot development.

The cast is absolutely first rate with George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez and Ving Rhames especially pungent in roles that seem written for them. The strong supporting cast includes such fine actors as Steve Zahn, Catherine Keener, Don Cheadle, Luis Guzman , Isaiah Washington, Dennis Farina, and Albert Brooks. And for those who enjoy powerful sexual chemistry Clooney and Lopez offer some of their finest collaborative acting. This is a fine movie and one that doubtless in time will be considered and under appreciated Film Classic. Grady Harp, July 06

4 out of 5 stars Witty   July 16, 2006
This movie was another great Clooney movie - I'll never tire of him playing sexy, witty criminals. I'm not a fan of Jennifer Lopez, but I'll be the first to admit that she put on a stunning performance in this movie.

The movie is about a romance that is highly unlikely in real life, but the point of movies is to escape from real life and watch some interesting situations that may never actually happen. In this case, it met the goals. It was above par in some aspects - there was a lot of witty dialogue used, where other movies would just use curse words. I liked that.

This is a must see for all Clooney fans.

5 out of 5 stars Out of Sight Review   July 12, 2006

This movie was a gift for my wife. She enjoys performances by both George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez. The movie portrayed both actors well, had a decent script, and relied on content and performance instead of sex and foul language to achieve the viewer's appreciation of the video.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but not believable   June 18, 2006

If you want an entertaining movie with some action, some romance and some Clooney and are willing to suspend belief, then this is for you.

Clooney was great as a thief with a conscience, always one step ahead of everyone else. The movie started off strong, meandered a bit then ended almost predictably. There were a few places where there were flashbacks, and sometimes I was confused as to what happened when. I also didn't get why Karen (Jennifer Lopez) would get involved wtih Jack (Clooney) so quickly, and risk losing her job and reputation - compared to what she did at the end. The clumsy thief at the end was a bit unbelievable too.

The movie did keep to a moderate pace, but it could have been shorter. My favorite part was the elevator scene. A few more of those types of situations would have made this movie a lot better.

somehow i just cannot tire of this movie. soderbergh's style is just right here, not as gimmicky as ocean's eleven and not as waste-of-time as ocean's twelve. it's witty and the pace is really nice, character's develop but are still charicatures, endearingly, and then it's over.
