Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com essential video
Screenwriter William Goldman's novel The Princess Bride earned its own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the cliches being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his skeptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story.
And what a story: a lowly stable boy, Westley (Cary Elwes), pledges his love to the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright), only to be abducted and reportedly killed by pirates while Buttercup is betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. Even as Buttercup herself is kidnapped by a giant, a scheming criminal mastermind, and a master Spanish swordsman, a mysterious masked pirate (could it be Westley?) follows in pursuit. As they sail toward the Cliffs of Insanity...
The wild and woolly arcs of the story, the sudden twists of fate, and, above all, the cartoon-scaled characters all work because of Goldman's very funny script, Reiner's confident direction, and a terrific cast. Elwes and Wright, both sporting their best English accents, juggle romantic fervor and physical slapstick effortlessly, while supporting roles boast Mandy Patinkin (the swordsman Inigo Montoya), Wallace Shawn (the incredulous schemer Vizzini), and Christopher Guest (evil Count Rugen) with brief but funny cameos from Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Peter Cook. --Sam Sutherland

you don't have it yet? inconceivable! July 22, 2006
Every time I find myself in a room with another Princess Bridite, it's a competition for who can come out with the most one-liners and snappy quotes from the movie. There are no favourites; from Mandy Patankin's straight-faced "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die", to whatever it is that Andre the Giant says at any given moment (I got all the rhyming stuff, but he's pretty hard to understand most of the time), to the Rodents Of Unusual Size in the Fireswamp, it's all good. Billy Crystal brings a little kvetch to the romp, along with a pricelessly shrill Carole Kane. Chris Sarandon, as the evil prince, plays his role just this side of farce; and Cary Elwes and Robin Wright (before Sean) add a cool center to the tale.
This is one of those movies you can't help watching when it comes on the TV in the electronics department; there are no dull moments in it, and it is acted with great joy by the cast. You can tell that they are having a good time; they all bring energy and empathy to their roles. Everyone should have this movie in their collection - it is easy entertainment for both young and older.
One of my favourites, smart humour for children and adults July 21, 2006
This is a smart and funny movie and it is really nice to get the extra features on the DVD - but it mostly the movie my kids are interested in. Better for slightly older kids (8 and up) but younger children enjoy the visual aspects (princesses castles etc)
The base story is a grandfather who comes to read his grandson a story while he is sick - and the movie occassionally cuts back to that. The story he is reading becomes the story of the film (with the grandfather occassionally narrating action in the background) Buttercup, loses her love Wesley (who always serves her with the words "As you wish") to the Dread pirate Roberts and mourns - however she is chosen by the Prince as his next bride - only to be kidnapped by three men (who it turns out are trying to kill her and 'frame' the neighbouring kingdom for nefarious reasons.
She is rescued by the Dread pirate Roberts who turns out to be her farmyboy love, Wesley. They are recaptured by the Prince who it seems has his own agenda for rescuing Buttercup and doing away with Wesley/dread pirate Roberts.
There is lots of gorgeous ham acting in this, a wonderful smart sassy script - and stellar performances from Mandy Pantikin as Inigo Montoya, Christopher Guest as the Count, Cary Elwes as Wesley and Chris Sarandon as the Prince.
This is a real gem.
A classic that belongs in everyone's DVD library July 14, 2006

The behind-the-scenes extras are good. There are no outtakes but the interviews with many of the actors makes up for that. There's a cute mini-game included. Overall, great DVD set.
Thrilling Movie July 13, 2006

I think this movie is a real neat one. It has everything I like in here. It has danger and adventure. Scheming and ploting. Love and Romance. Fun and Humor. It's about a lady named Buttercup and she marries a farm boy (Westley). Westley goes to seek is fortune and the ship is attacked by pirates. She is told he is dead and is betrothed to the prince. Then she is kidnapped and is taken to Gildaria because there she is going to be killed so a war will be started. A man in black chases after and gains her back. Who the man in black is and how the story turns out is for YOU to find out!
Fairy Tale July 13, 2006
I first saw this movie on my school ski trip and loved it! A funny fairy tale, this is a great family movie. Buttercup is elegant, Wesly is brave, and the evil man comes to his demise! Another great feature is the cheesy special effects. It gives the movie a more "homely" feel if you know what I mean.
If you are looking for a great movie to watch with family and friends I really reccomend The Princess Bride.
