Mel Brooks scored his first commercial hit with this raucous Western spoof starring the late Cleavon Little as the newly hired (and conspicuously black) sheriff of Rock Ridge. Sheriff Bart teams up with deputy Jim (Gene Wilder) to foil the railroad-building scheme of the nefarious Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman). The simple plot is just an excuse for a steady stream of gags, many of them unabashedly tasteless, that Brooks and his wacky cast pull off with side-splitting success. The humor is so juvenile and crude that you just have to surrender to it; highlights abound, from the lunkheaded Alex Karras as the ox-riding Mongo to Madeline Kahn's uproarious send-up of Marlene Dietrich as saloon songstress Lili Von Shtupp. Adding to the comedic excess is the infamous campfire scene involving a bunch of hungry cowboys, heaping servings of baked beans and, well, you get the idea. --Jeff Shannon
Description
The railroad's got to run through the town of Rock Ridge. How do you drive out the townfolk in order to steal their land? Send in the toughest gang you've got...and name a new sheriff who'll last about 24 hours. But that's not really the plot of Blazing Saddles, just the pretext. Once Mel Brooks' lunatic film many call his best gets started, logic is lost in a blizzard of gags, jokes, quips, puns, howlers, growlers and outrageous assaults upon good taste or any taste at all. Cleavon Little as the new lawman, Gene Wilder as the wacko Waco Kid, Brooks himself as a dim-witted politico and Madeline Kahn in her Marlene Dietrich send-up that earned an Academy Award nomination all give this sagebrush saga their lunatic best. And when Blazing Saddles can't contain itself at the finale, it just proves the Old West will never be the same!

Five Star Redneck Review!!! July 3, 2006

It's understandable that not everyone finds the same things funny, or insulting, or admirable... But to give this movie one star is to not understand what the movie stands for. Mel Brooks is a cinematic genius in his unforgiving and relentless jabs at whatever you think isn't politically correct. For those of you who are too blind to see, the point of this movie was to OVERindulge in the use of the "n" word, racism, sexism, homosexuality, etc. to show how ridiculous it all is. And with Mel Brooks, nothing is sacred, nothing is off limits. Everything is fair game. And I think Mr. Brooks reaches the height of his social commentary with Blazing Saddles by taking subjects as far as they'll go.
You may not find the movie funny, but show a little f--king respect for what the film achieves and what it stands for you partisan curmudgeons! Mel Brooks has been generous to us for decades, enlightening us and imparting on us his view of this ridiculous world by means of humor. He's made the world a better place by showing it what a wonderful place it often isn't. Long live the funny Jew!

Most Overrated Comedy Of All Time May 13, 2006

This is the most tedious, unfunny, overrated movie of all time. It's interesting that this is from the same man who produced Spaceballs, which was actually rather humorous (though also quite tedious at times). I'll always be at a loss to understand why people think it's so funny. His utter lack of subtlety is terrible to behold.
The only time Mel Brooks was exactly on target.... May 1, 2006

For the most part, Mel Brooks' comedies include a few amusing moments, and A LOT of dumb (not funny) gags and spoofs. Movies like Robin Hood: Men In Tights are great examples of this. I personally prefer the Zucker brothers' stuff (Airplane!) over Mel. Mel's only true home run to date is Blazing Saddles, but what a home run it is. Perfect over the top comedy, TONS of classic moments and quotable lines, completely non-PC storyline and dialogue, this is one of the greatest comedies EVER. Any fan of Monty Python zaniness will appreciate the genius of Blazing Saddles.
Of course, a large part of Blazing Saddles' success has to do with the EXCELLENT screenplay, and a large portion of that must be credited to Richard Pryor (who was going to play the lead character, the role that went to Cleavon Little). Pryor's sharp dialogue is very evident here, and mixed with Mel's slapstick, the writing here is top-notch (and VERY funny).
In addition to the writing, all of the actors turn in tongue-in-cheek, over the top performances, and the movie is all the better for it. Harvey Korman plays the nefarious Heddy (that's HEDLEY!) LaMarr to perfection, while Cleavon Little is fantastic as our hero, the sheriff. Rounding out the characters are the always understated yet excellent Gene Wilder, Madelaine Khan sporting an outrageous accent, and Mel Brooks himself as 'The Guv'....and who could ever forget the meatheaded but lovable Mongo??
One of the very best things about Blazing Saddles is that it can never be duplicated. This is one of the few movies that truly could not be made today, with all of the non politically correct material it contains. Ironically, it is this very non-PC nature that makes Blazing Saddles so howlingly funny, as it lampoons the stupidity of prejudice in all its forms. If you are offended by Blazzing Saddles, Mongo is smarter than you are.
If you take your comedy seriously, Blazing Saddles is an absolute must see. As one of the greatest comedies of all time, it stands head and shoulders above the AWFUL 'comedies' that Hollywood turns out these days. HIGHLY RECCOMENDED!!
