The Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical is a combination of backstage action and Grease without the unwholesome habits. Scoring record ratings at the time of its January 2006 broadcast, it's a smash hit with tween audiences (ages 6 to 10), but appealing for all ages. At a New Year's Eve party, Troy (Zac Efron of the WB's Summerland) has a chance meeting with Gabriella (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) when they share a karaoke song. Lo and behold, when school resumes, they discover that Gabriella has just transferred to Troy's East High School, a campus divided into tight cliques of jocks, cheerleaders, brainiacs, and skater dudes. Eager to recapture the magic they'd discovered during karaoke, Troy and Gabriella consider auditioning for the school's upcoming musical, much to the dismay of the school's frost queen/theater goddess, Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody). Problem is, Troy is also the star of the basketball team and Gabrielle is being recruited to compete in the Scholastic Decathlon. Will they give up their cliques to start something new, or will they do as the show's first big anthem urges and "Stick to the Status Quo"? Well, this is a Disney movie, so maybe the sacrifices won't be that hard, and even the hints of romance are mild.
The bestselling soundtrack is catchy in that Disney-pop kind of way, mixing in a dash of hip-hop ("Getcha Head in the Game," punctuated by squeaky basketball shoes and other sound effects), salsa ("Bop to the Top"), and the endearingly hammy ("What I've Been Looking For" performed by Sharpay and her brother, Ryan, played by Lucas Gabreel). It's not hard to imagine High School Musical becoming a semi-staple for high school groups to perform themselves. DVD bonus features include sing-along subtitles; a 9-minute featurette discussing casting, recording sessions, and rehearsals; a multi-angle look at a rehearsal of "Bop to the Top"; and music videos for "We're All in This Together" and a song that didn't make it into the final film, "I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," performed by Efron, Hudgens, Tisdale, and Gabreel. --David Horiuchi

I love this movie! May 28, 2006
This is one of the best disney movies yet, but I like the parent trap most. THis movie reminds me of grease because its about a boy and girl who meet on vacation thinking that they will never meet again, but end up meeting in high school. they face many challenges but get through it. I reccommed this movie to other kids and adults.
Perfect for all my chidren even teens like it May 28, 2006
This reminds me of my obcession with Grease II when I was young. Much lighter contentand appropriate for younger audience. My teens have watched it 5 or 6 times.
High School Musical - A brave Depiction of the Bush Years May 28, 2006

Disney have finally recaptured the bravery that saw them depict a young woman trapped in an abusive relationship (Beauty and the Beast), arab-american relations (Aladdin) and the Ambien sleep medication controversy (Sleeping Beauty). In HSM, our two white-toothed heroes avoid having to make difficult choices or sacrificing anything when faced with dilemma of conflicting after-school activities. They multitask, they work the system, and use every 'Razzle Dazzle-em' PR book in the trick to prove you can have it all. No choice. No sacrifice. Wilkommen nach Bushworld. Bienvenue. Welcome.
Eh, okay, I liked it. May 27, 2006

Im the type of person who watches the Disney Channel because there is nothing else on TV. The orginal movies are a different story. I run, don't walk away from them. When High School Musical premired in January, I of course, didn't care.I dismissed it as crappy Disney fluff like The Cheetah Girls and other efforts put out by Disney's cable channel. 5 months later, the soundtrack is the #1 album on ITunes, sells really well on Amazon and it's absent from nearly every record store. I just happend to be in the video store wandering around, going through my mental "What Have I seen already" list. My eyes landed on HSM and after arguing with myself, I rented it. I complained over the ride home how I was going to waste 2 hours of my movie viewing life but I realized I was wrong. "Musical" was really enjoyable. The summary is classic. Basketball star,Troy (Zac Efron) and smart Gabriella, (Vanessa Anne Hudges)meet at a karoke contest over New Years and they reluctently sing together. They both discover they can carry a tune and they become friends. All is forgotton untill Gabriella's mom transfers her to East High, where everyone is divided into cliques. She reunites with Troy and discovered he is the school's basketball star and his teammates would dissaprove of Gabriella. Troy, who doesn't like the whole clique thing, decides to audition for the winter musical with Gabriella. All's well, right? Wrong! Troy has a championship game and couldn't possibly devote time to the musical. The plot is perdictable with popular girl Sharpay, (Ashley Tisdale) and brother Ryan, (Lucas Gabriel) who have starred in 17 school plays and of course, they are threated by Troy and Gabriella. They try to move the play's call back date back when Troy's big game and Gabriella's math event is held. Troy's team, who aren't so happy with him for trying out are happy to help with Gabriella's math buddies to bring down Sharpay and Ryan. Eventually, the social cliques break and we have a musical and Troy's team wins the big game. The songs are irritating. I hated "Get Cha Head In The Game" and didn't care about "Bop To The Top" or "We're All In This Together". Im going to stay away from the soundtrack but if you're a fan, buy it. If you don't like "Grease" done Disney style, don't bother seeing this. This movie is enjoyable and I'd reccomend it for people who like light weight movies. 3/5 stars.

Boo - Big Disappointment May 27, 2006

DVD Releases are meant to add meaningful extras to the movie. In this case, the behind the scenes segment and the dancing segment (only includes Bop to the Top) were very thin. My family loved the movie when released on TV (we watched each version). The extras in the DVD added very little that we had not already seen on TV. Even my 8 year old asked to write a letter of complaint to Disney. Disney definitely mailed in this one after a superb effort on the original release.
