Better action, a bit of sex, and gorier R-rated violence make Underworld: Evolution a reasonably satisfying sequel to 2003's surprise hit Underworld. Looking stunning as ever in her black leather battle gear, Kate Beckinsale is every goth guy's fantasy as Selene, the vampire "death dealer" who's now fighting to stop the release of the original "Lycan" werewolf, William (Brian Steele) from the prison that's held him for centuries. As we learn from the film's action-packed prologue, William and his brother Marcus (Tony Curran) began the bloodline of vampires and werewolves, and after witnessing centuries of warfare between them, their immortal father Corvinus (Derek Jacobi) now seeks Selene and the human vampire/lycan hybrid Michael (Scott Speedman) to put an end to the war perpetuated by Victor (Bill Nighy), the vampire warrior whose betrayal of Selene turns Underworld: Evolution into an epic tale of familial revenge. This ambitious attempt at Shakespearean horror is compromised by a script (by Danny McBride and returning director Len Wiseman, Beckinsale's real-life husband) that's more confusing than it needs to be, with too many characters and not enough storytelling detail to flesh them all out. Aspiring to greatness and falling well short of that goal, Underworld: Evolution succeeds instead as a full-throttle action/horror thriller, with enough swordplay, gunplay, and CGI monsters to justify the continuation of the Underworld franchise. If you're an established fan, this is a must-see movie; if not, well... at least it's better than Van Helsing! --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first   May 29, 2006
This is a terrific movie. BUT you do have to go into it thinking you will see an action-filled vampire movie much like the first. You CANNOT expect to see "Shawshank Redemption" or "LOTR" quality. If you go into the movie thinking you are going to see a good vampire-action movie, you will LOVE this movie. The plot is twisted a little bit and the way everything is tied in makes "Underworld: Evolution" better than the first movie!!!

I watched this movie at first hoping it could at least be a descent sequel like it was supposed to be. Not even close. The story goes from moveing fast, to agonizingly slow, and then back to fast. I dont mind a slow movie but changing the pace too much just makes me bored. The special effects are cool, but nothing to get too excited about. If you have seen the first movie then you dont get anything new out of this one. Mostly though, the villans are boring. If I want to see someone who can regenerate from ANY wound in one day then I will watch X-men agian. Don't get me wrong, I liked the first movie, but I feel cheated out of a couple bucks after watching this, so unless you have to see it to make your life complete then you are better off with any other vampire movie.

I stopped watching it after an hour. I kept waiting for it to get better, but it didn't. It followed the same cycle every 10-15 minutes or so: Kate Beckingsdale jabbering on about deathdealer and lycan history. Just when you're ready to fall asleep, just cue to Speedman turning into a monster and fighting for 5 minutes. Then, after the fight's over, listen to Kate jabber on again for another 10-15 minutes.

Rent it if you must, or see one of the Blade movies.

Underworld is back! I've watched the first one on DVD, then I watched this one in the cinema. When the DVD was available to buy, I immediately bought it.
Superb! Two-thumbs-up! A kind of movie that you want to watch it again and again. The battle between the vampires and werewolves. Excellent action movements and AWESOME story!

I loved this better then the first one. There was a lot more action in this one and the actors played their roles well.
