The question facing any viewer of the Japanese CG feature Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is: do you have to know the games on which its based in order to understand the film? And the answer is: it certainly helps. But even complete novices (i.e., most parents) in the Final Fantasy world will find some entertainment in its wealth of fantasy-based action, and the animation never fails to astonish. Picking up two years after an epic battle between the forces of good (represented by brooding soldier Cloud) and evil (Clouds former general, Sephiroth), FFVII opens in the devastated city of Midgard, whose youthful occupants suffer from a ghastly disease known as Geostigma. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the plague, but their gesture conceals a more sinister purpose: to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Cloud and his companions must once again rise to the occasion to stop the siblings and the revived Sephiroth from unleashing total destruction. Complex and self-referential to the point of occasional incomprehension, Final Fantasy VII will definitely be most appreciated by fans of the game series, but if others can look past the numbing dialogue and frenetic action (which is a bit too intense for very young children), the film offers a carefree and action-packed viewing experience. The two-disc set contains the original Japanese language version of the film as well as an English-dubbed edition (Rachel Leigh Cook and Christy Carlson Romano, among others, provide the vocal talent) and a version edited for the Venice Film Festival. A 30-minute featurette that recaps the Final Fantasy story up to VII, as well as a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, and promotions for future Final Fantasy VII games and products round out the extras. --Paul Gaita
Description
FINAL FANTASY VII: Advent Children continues the games storyline in this CG-animated film, featuring non-stop action and exciting visual effects. Two years have passed since the ruins of Midgar stand as a testament to the sacrifices made in order to bring peace. However, the world will soon face a new menace. A mysterious illness is spreading fast. Old enemies are astir. And Cloud (Burton), who walked away from the life of a hero to live in solitude, must step forward yet again...
Backed by a full team of video game extraordinaires, the film was directed by Tetsuya Nomura and Takeshi Nozue, written by Kazushige Nojima and produced by Shinji Hashimoto and Yoshinori Kitase.

Lost of eye candy, but not much plot May 29, 2006
Fans of FFVII are going to love this movie due to the nostagila (if you want to call it that, FFVII is not that old), but people unfamilar with the game probably won't like it. It has a pretty weak plot, but some awesome action scenes and just great special effects in general.
I enjoyed it, but I was hoping for a little bit more in terms of a story.
Loved it! May 27, 2006

I loved the game and the movie is really great! The CGI is beautiful and the dub isn't that bad at all. The Compilation of Final Fantasy VII is really coming along nicely, and I'm hoping for a remake some day...
A fanboy dream come true May 25, 2006
Thank you SquareEnix for giving us Final Fantasy VII fans something like Advent Children at last. Especially after the disappointment that was The Spirits Within, Advent Children is not only a refreshing nostalgic experience for any fan of Final Fantasy VII, but a visual representation of, in my opinion, the deepest and most memorable videogame I have ever played. At its core, VII was a love story between Cloud and Aerith, but it goes way beyond that to Cloud's painful memories and let's not forget saving the world and that whole Jenova thingy. Most "hardcore" fans who'd been playing Final Fantasy since the original were turned off by VII's new direction. It's was completely different from what they were used to and who can blame them? It traded old school dungeons for smoky industrial cities and the slums of Midgar. Square took a huge leap onto the Playstation platform with VII (they had been pretty much Nintendo exclusive up to that point). It started the whole CG cutscene trend in RPGs and made it cool to know how to breed a gold chocobo and where the Knights of the Round materia was. Final Fantasy VII was a turning point for the RPG, especially in America. Most younger gamers will tell you VII was their first RPG and it's what got them into the genre. It justs goes to show how much of an influence the game really had. The movie is definitely directed towards the fans. I imagine it'd be hard for anyone who has never played through VII to understand what was going on, but that's not to say newbies won't enjoy it. The CG is simply amazing. I've never seen anything quite like it. Square has always had incredible cinematics, and graphics junkies will drool over this one. Little bits of fan service are littered throughout the movie. For example, in one scene Cloud in driving his motorcycle down the road and he passes a sign that reads "Healin Lodge." I had to laugh at that.
The ending of Final Fantasy VII was quite a cliffhanger. You don't know whether our heroes make it out alive or if the whole world is destroyed. It left many questions unanswered and that's where Advent Children picks up: two years later. I'm sure everyone's heard about the plot and I'm not going to ruin anything, but it definitely does the fans some service! There is a point where a Bahumut is summoned and all the old characters come together to fight it. A little girl (I think it's Marlene) asks "Who are they?" and Tifa says "Just some old friends." I couldn't help but smile watching that. Don't be turned off by the delay or the fact that Spirits Within was a pretty bad movie, you really should see Advent Children. When I was watching it, I felt myself wanting to play through VII again (and I've already played through it three times!) One of the things I liked best about Advent Children is it shows us Cloud's true feelings about Aerith and how he feels that he let her die. He also has many doubts about himself and he's afraid of being alone. He can't deal with trying to save people and not being able to help them. With the game, it was hard to show all these emotions through plain dialogue, but the movie really does the game some justice.
Has anyone heard about the SquareEnix remaking VII for the PS3? There was a tech demo at E3 and I think this movie was supposed to get us pumped up for that. I'm willing to play through a fourth time!
Coolest movie EVER May 25, 2006

This movie is unbelievable, and worth all the setbacks in release. just inexpressable. looked almost human.....a masterpiece to say the least.if you have played final fantasy 7 and still do not own this movie, then the greatest of shame is on you. its just a little hard to follow in terms of story, you might have to watch it a few times, which is still a good thing. a must have.

Im not going to write a big in-depth review for this, because there are already about 100 of them writen.
This movie is very very good, especially for any fan of the series, or games in general, and some of my friends dont even play games and they also enjoyed this movie alot. The action sequences are un-rivaled!
Enjoy!
