Better action, a bit of sex, and gorier R-rated violence make Underworld: Evolution a reasonably satisfying sequel to 2003's surprise hit Underworld. Looking stunning as ever in her black leather battle gear, Kate Beckinsale is every goth guy's fantasy as Selene, the vampire "death dealer" who's now fighting to stop the release of the original "Lycan" werewolf, William (Brian Steele) from the prison that's held him for centuries. As we learn from the film's action-packed prologue, William and his brother Marcus (Tony Curran) began the bloodline of vampires and werewolves, and after witnessing centuries of warfare between them, their immortal father Corvinus (Derek Jacobi) now seeks Selene and the human vampire/lycan hybrid Michael (Scott Speedman) to put an end to the war perpetuated by Victor (Bill Nighy), the vampire warrior whose betrayal of Selene turns Underworld: Evolution into an epic tale of familial revenge. This ambitious attempt at Shakespearean horror is compromised by a script (by Danny McBride and returning director Len Wiseman, Beckinsale's real-life husband) that's more confusing than it needs to be, with too many characters and not enough storytelling detail to flesh them all out. Aspiring to greatness and falling well short of that goal, Underworld: Evolution succeeds instead as a full-throttle action/horror thriller, with enough swordplay, gunplay, and CGI monsters to justify the continuation of the Underworld franchise. If you're an established fan, this is a must-see movie; if not, well... at least it's better than Van Helsing! --Jeff Shannon

Good Action Scenes June 28, 2006
I did like the first movie better, but really enjoyed this movie. The action scenes and the stunts were very entertaining.
Pretty good movie! June 27, 2006
OK... I didn't see the previous ones. I was talked into seeing this one and I wasn't sorry.
This movie delivers!
Along the way, the characters do bring you up to speed as to the story line. So, I did understand what was happening after a while.
What I liked most was that this movie moved! It gained speed and didn't stop until it came screeching in to the end. It is special effects laden, but this story could not have been told without all of the special effects.... and they are done well.
It is comic book to be sure... so my expectations weren't too high. However, I was pleasantly suprised. They really did a good job with this movie.
Not to be taken too seriously in regards to the folklore of vampires and werewolves, it is quite a romp through reaching for the heights.
If you have some time to spend and want to be entertained and enjoy a thrill ride, I would definitely recommend this one. Worth every penny of rental. Take it for what it is meant to be and you won't be disappointed.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is not as good as the first but this one has sertin parts that are better. Marcaus looks ausome the fighting has been kicked up a noch and Kate Beckinsale finally takes her clothes off. Evolution is much more grusome and gorey than the first and has alot more language and sex. if you want a cool movie with alot of gore this is for you. if you want a cool movie with barly any gore than i strongly recomend Underworld 1. I am hoping they make an extended unrated Underworld 2 beacuse the extend Underworld 1 had alot more in it.
Fun to watch! Kate Beckinsale can act and move! June 26, 2006

I say this is an excellent sequel that compliments the first film quite well. I believe the films are equal in storyline, but the second film seems to have cooler sets and special effects.
My one complaint about this film is that it verbally tells you what is happening just a little too much. Although I enjoy Beckinsale's voice and accent as she tells us about her journey, I was waiting for her to even tell me how many bullets she had left in her gun.
However, that minor flaw does not take away that this is a great action film.
Some people have commented that this movie fails to deliver what the first movie did, but I don't think that's a fair statement, as we had the element of surprise in the first one. This film was more of a bad guy chasing after the good guys adventure. And when one looks at it from that perspective, the movie is really quite good.
Give this movie a viewing. I think you'll be glad you did.
It delivers action, drama, romance, suspense, and a little bit of gore. What more do you want from a film called Underworld?

One Word: Boring! June 26, 2006

All right, I never was a huge fan of Underworld in the first place, I felt the movie was just really all flash but it had an interesting enough plot and went at a pretty exciting pace.
This sequel though was boring! I mean that is the one word that came to my mind when the credits finally came on. By the time the ending came, I could have cared less about any of the characters because honestly they all annoyed me. The characters were basically doing what they were doing in the first movie- trying to act all cool and thus coming off seriously wooden, and for some reason this attitude continuing in the sequel just makes the acting seem even worse. The fighting scenes seemed no different than the first movie's ones, definitely nothing that'll make you go 'wow' or anything. This movie seriously starts to drag, or anyway I got this feeling towards the end of the film that I really, really wanted the movie to finish soon. My interest for the movie left even before an hour into the film honestly.
Overall, I recommend the first Underworld over the sequel. The sequel is nothing worth watching. It drags, the acting is pretty weak, and the plot itself, though sounds interesting, turns to out to be nothing amazing. I don't plan on watching it again.
2/5 stars only.
