Amazon.com essential video
A Hong Kong combination of Batman and The Three Musketeers, The Heroic Trio is a winning mix of action, sci-fi, fantasy, and police caper starring three outstanding Hong Kong actresses. Former popular singer Anita Mui is Tung/Wonder Woman, a mysterious crime fighter who aids the police whenever needed. Michelle Yeoh is Ching/Invisible Woman, an unwilling disciple to an age-old Evil Master, and Maggie Cheung is Chat/Thief Catcher, a runaway enlisted by the Evil Master who is now a bounty hunter for hire. When baby boys are being stolen for a horrific plan, Tung assists in the investigation while Chat plans to make some bucks off of catching the culprit. The baby thief is none other than Ching, who is carrying out the kidnappings for the Evil Master with the aid of her lover's invention--an invisible robe. But the good in her wins out, and she joins forces with Tung and Chat. This is a superhero film, to be sure. Fantastic sets and impressive wire-strung fight choreography make The Heroic Trio extremely fun to watch. Wonder Woman enters the picture by running full-tilt atop power lines while Chat rides a motorcycle and wields a shotgun like the Terminator. The outlandish and complicated plot seems right at home here, heightened by the moody lighting and the combined screen presence of Mui, Yeoh, and Cheung. All three give fierce and touching performances in a hyperbolic and enjoyable film. --Shannon Gee

3 out of 5 stars MICHELLE YEOH IN A SPANDEX   March 7, 2006

That's all I needed to see to make this a classic movie. Some very good fight scenes, but you have to be pretty hard-core into these movies to really like this. Also some very weird fight scenes. The final fight I have never made it through to the end, not cause it was too sick, just because I did't like it. But I did like the whole movie up to that point. It is great to see Iron robe yim from OUATIC playing a REAL baddie.

The dubbing is a different story, this would have easily get a 4/5 if I could get my hands on the original language version. Seriously, this movie is like 86 minutes long, that is just a horribly done dvd, they remaster the picture to perfection, but can't give any type of other feature on this, how freaking hard is it to pu the original language on these.

5 out of 5 stars Cheesy Fun!   September 19, 2005

Forget Batman, this is the way a super-hero movie should be done. Incredible imagery (some shots will take your breath away) prevails in a film genre that traditionally should not look as good as this does. There is also a plot (underground demon lord stealing babies to find an heir) and Anita Mui sings, too... what more could want? A warning the film is gritty violent, and contains a scene with an infant that may disturbing to sensitive viewers.

5 out of 5 stars Taking the formula to the limit   December 12, 2004

Somebody is abducting infant boys in the metropolis and law enforcement is remiss to explain why. As we quickly discover it ends up being a Dark Master of the sewers. One of the kidnapped boys is to be selected as next emperor of this half-world and the rest will be terminated. In this very popular Hong Kong action movie about a trio of fighting females overcome their own ghosts and differences and join forces. As the jacket of the DVD explains, the police have use of the services of Shadow Fox (Anita Mui), Mercy (Maggie Cheung) and Michelle Yeoh (Invisible Woman) to stop the evil beast.

Shadow Fox (Anita Mui), and so happens to be married to police officer Damian Lau. In times of crisis, she changes to her alter ego Shadow Fox and patrols rooftops. Conversely, Mercy (Maggie Cheung) - short for Mercenary, is - as the name suggests - a killer for hire. Invisible Woman (Michelle Yeoh) starts out in the movie as the slave to the Emperor of the Underworld adding complexity to the composition of The Heroic Trio. This all-star trio of crime fighter, killer for hire, and lackey come together to form a tenuous yet effective bond.

From Ching Siu-Tung comes a great action movie. Hong Kong action films do not stray too often from the formula of the three-babes and it does not seem to be dying out anytime soon. Along the same lines such films So Close and Naked Weapon (both also available on Amazon.com) also take the formula and run with it. For anyone interested in this genre those are tow other movies to purchase. The Heroic Trio detours in the end to a strange Terminatoresque - which you will need to watch the movie to figure out, that's far from necessary - but makes it nonetheless entertaining. I can't get enough of wirework films so for all those HK film enthusiasts - this is keeper.

4 out of 5 stars Good, Cheesy Fun   October 20, 2004

First of all, this review is based on the original (subtitled) version, not this Disney-edited DVD.

Don't watch this movie expecting something of the caliber of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon; you'll be disappointed. An obvious take-off of stories like The Three Musketeers and with a mood similar to the Batman movies, this film is often confusing and melodramatic, at times simply absurd.

That said, the acting is decent and the fight scenes engaging, making for an enjoyable film. It's entertaining, if not earth-moving.

5 out of 5 stars Please note!   July 13, 2004

For those of you thinking of purchasing this DVD, please note that the dialogue is dubbed in English completely. For those of you who prefer it in its original language (Cantonese), give this a miss.

Otherwise the movie is great and the acting superb, plus we get to see the late Anita Mui in action. What can you say... top notch performance from Michelle Yeoh, Maggie Cheung and Anita Mui.
