The question facing any viewer of the Japanese CG feature Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is: do you have to know the games on which its based in order to understand the film? And the answer is: it certainly helps. But even complete novices (i.e., most parents) in the Final Fantasy world will find some entertainment in its wealth of fantasy-based action, and the animation never fails to astonish. Picking up two years after an epic battle between the forces of good (represented by brooding soldier Cloud) and evil (Clouds former general, Sephiroth), FFVII opens in the devastated city of Midgard, whose youthful occupants suffer from a ghastly disease known as Geostigma. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the plague, but their gesture conceals a more sinister purpose: to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Cloud and his companions must once again rise to the occasion to stop the siblings and the revived Sephiroth from unleashing total destruction. Complex and self-referential to the point of occasional incomprehension, Final Fantasy VII will definitely be most appreciated by fans of the game series, but if others can look past the numbing dialogue and frenetic action (which is a bit too intense for very young children), the film offers a carefree and action-packed viewing experience. The two-disc set contains the original Japanese language version of the film as well as an English-dubbed edition (Rachel Leigh Cook and Christy Carlson Romano, among others, provide the vocal talent) and a version edited for the Venice Film Festival. A 30-minute featurette that recaps the Final Fantasy story up to VII, as well as a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, and promotions for future Final Fantasy VII games and products round out the extras. --Paul Gaita

A visual feist.
I've never played any of the games and had no idea what the backstory was supposed to be, but nevertheless, I was amazed. The visual effects were stunning; I don't think I've ever been so engrossed with completely ficticious battle seen, and doubt that I ever will be again. The texturing was so detailed that you could pick up on ever nuance of the character's movement or emotion, or even count the hairs on Cloud's head.
I did feel as though I was missing certain aspects of the plot, having never played the game, but the special features filled in most of the holes, and I don't feel as though the storyline was lacking in any specific field or aspect. The characters were original and engaging, and were developed well in the short time alloted between fight scenes. And for that matter, who cares about characterization? The battles were that good. This is a definite must buy for any anime and foriegn film fan, or anyone who'd like to try something a little different.

This has got to be the finest follow up to FF VII. I would suggest anyone who enjoyed FF VII to buy this ASAP.

This is one film that I have been looking forward to for a very long time, an without hesitation I can honestly say that this is exactly what I have been hoping for.
First of all, we will think back during the release of 'Final Fantasy: the Spirits Within'. Before its release, this was a big excitement for Final Fantasy fans at the time, but the result was a huge disappointment. To be honest, if you think about it, it wasn't actually a Final Fantasy film. Sure it had great CGI throughout but the story lead to nothing but a so-so, pointless sci-fi.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, however, is a much greater achievement for a Final Fantasy film. The story takes place two years after the events of Final Fantasy VII on the Playstation. The ruins of Midgar stand as a testament to the sacrifices made in order to bring peace. The world faces a new menace. A mysterious disease known as Geostigma is spreading through the children around Midgar. Three new enemies, Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz, intend to start another reunion: to revive Sephiroth and unleash a total destruction.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is an action packed fantasy experience and the action is spectacular, with probably some of the best battles I've ever seen in a movie, I couldn't take my eyes off it for a second. The animation is superb, while taking the characters from a video game into a film of CGI has been done exceedingly well. And the CGI visuals itself, throughout, are quite simply beautiful. And also as a great fan of the Final Fantasy soundtrack, Advent Children really lived up to the highest standards.
Another thing id like to mention is that, "is this just for the fans?" Well it definitely will be more respected by them and understanding.. But you cant actually say that this is a fans film only. Think about it....This is a top-notch entertaining 'film', not a turn-based RPG.
With the absolutely stunning scenes of sword battles, magic events and the stunning event of Behomoth-Sin, this was an incredibly magnificent epic experience throughout, and without a doubt one of THE greatest animated movies I have ever seen. Absolutely Breathtaking.

While film looks and sounds amazing, the plot is mediocre at best. Fun to watch, but would be boring for those not familiar with Final Fantasy VII.
